San Antonio Athenians SC defeated Lonestar SC 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Blossom Soccer Stadium, ending their inaugural season on a high.

Each side got forward on separate occasions early, but it was the hosts who drew first blood in the eighth minute. Allison Fahey lofted the ball in from the left side of the 18-yard box, then Marlyn Campa’s header arced just beyond the Lonestar SC goalkeeper’s reach and in.

What was arguably Lonestar SC’s best chance to equalize in the first half came just four minutes later. A ball was played through the center and a Lonestar attacker kept her shot low and on target, but Athenians goalkeeper Gaby Lopez managed to parry the attempt.

Lonestar continued to get forward as the half endured, but the Athenians managed to double their lead in the 31st minute. Leslie Rios latched onto a ball up the left side of the pitch and squared it to the center of the box where Fahey controlled the ball and found space to place the ball in the bottom right corner of the net.

The second half proved to be somewhat of an odd role reversal from the first. While Lonestar SC had a better share of play before halftime, the Athenians came out after the interval looking to attack more, despite already being up by two goals.

As they had on Saturday, the Athenians came racing out of the gate in the second half, looking to add another goal to their tally within a minute of the restart. Fahey got on the end of a ball forward and took a powerful shot, but it sailed just over the crossbar.

In the 53rd minute, Becca Mays ended up getting the first of her two goals in the second half via a penalty kick. She got on the end of a long ball forward, was taken down for a penalty kick and ended up calmly sliding it into the bottom right corner.

Six minute later, the Athenians were a whisker away from grabbing their fourth score off a slick attacking move, denied only by the frame of the goal. A ball was slid centrally to Michelle Hogan from the right, but her shot bounced off the post.

Shortly after the frame of the goal denied Hogan a second time, the Athenians grabbed the fourth and final goal of the match in the 74th minute. Marlyn Campa chipped a ball over the defense for May to run onto, and although her shot wasn’t the strongest or cleanest, it managed to trickle into the bottom left corner of the net.

Although Sunday’s match marked the end of the the Athenians’ inaugural WPSL season, they still have one match left to play before they close the books. The Tigres UANL women’s team will visit Blossom Soccer Stadium on July 15 for a club friendly. The Athenians’ previously hosted Pachuca for a friendly on May 20, a match which drew over 2,000 fans despite a San Antonio FC game happening simultaneously.
