Both San Antonio FC and Corinthians FC of San Antonio will be playing their first U.S. Open Cup match of the year in the first meaningful Alamo Derby. Corinthians, an NPSL side, passed through the first round with a forfeit by NTX Rayados. SAFC joins Open Cup play in the 2nd round like all other USL teams.

NASL clubs join in the 3rd round followed by MLS in the 4th.

Despite being in a lower division, Corinthians FC looks to be a tough matchup as the amateur club has signed several former Mexican league players to their squad. Both clubs are likely to take this match and tournament seriously. For Corinthians, there is money and praise to be won by moving up through the tournament. For SAFC, the idea of playing an MLS squad in a meaningful game likely means something to the front office and players who are preparing MLS expansion bid.

The winner of this match will play the winner of USL’s Tulsa Roughnecks FC vs. PDL’s Des Moines Menace.

No matter which side you choose to support in the first meaningful Alamo Derby, it should be an entertaining game.

SAFC Game 2-1Victor Araujo recovers on an attack at Toyota Field

Match Details: U.S. Open Cup Round 2. Toyota Field. San Antonio, TX Weds. 5/18/2016. Kickoff at 7:30pm Central

How To Watch: No broadcast is being provided. Tickets are still available.

Keys for SAFC: Similarly to last league match, the squad has to figure out a way to finish. Tons of chances being created but most are killed quickly inside the 18.

Players To Watch: The captain and vice captain. Ford and Rafa will need to be vocal in this match and make sure players are winning the game mentally. Corinthians has almost a full XI of former Mexican league players who have semi-retired. If SAFC doesn’t play intelligently, they will lose to the mountain of experience Corinthians has acquired for the US Open Cup.

Pitch Black Projected Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Ford (c); Cochrane, McCarthy, McBride, Moseley; Thuriere, Castillo;  Johnson,  Alvarez, Araujo; Chin

Score Prediction: San Antonio FC 2-1 Corinthians FC of San Antonio Between not having many matches under their belt and hiring a handful of former Mexican league talent, there’s no telling what the CFC squad will look like. I’m guessing the higher division club comes away with a win on Wednesday, but if Corinthians plays a squad that wouldn’t be eligible in their NPSL league play its tough to consider them underdogs.

  1. I am actually kind of nervous for this game. Think SAFC will advance but this will not be easy. Also really disappointing that SAFC aren’t providing a stream, have to work so I was hoping to get a stream. Sucks that the US Soccer doesn’t demand all games to be streamed like USL does.

  2. Good news! It is being streamed on YouTube. Raw video only though so it’ll look a little different.
