SAFC announced Thursday the signing of former New York Red Bulls and New York Red Bulls II player Manolo Sanchez.
Sanchez was drafted by NYRB in the 2015 MLS Superdraft and played three matches with them before being loaned to the club’s USL side NYRB II. The 24 year old forward made 24 appearances for the USL side, netting 4 goals and earning Team of the Week honors.
Manolo was called up by Puerto Rico’s National Team to play a friendly against NYCFC in December of 2015, giving the SAFC roster another player who represents a national team.
The signing of Sanchez shakes up my way-too-early starting XI prediction. He is a player still at the beginning of his professional career, but already has loads of experience both with MLS and USL clubs.
It’s an interesting note that while the SAFC release has Manolo listed as a forward, both NYRB & Puerto Rico sites have him at midfield. This may be better for him and his chance for playing time, as the SAFC midfield is pretty packed already whereas Shawn Chin and Jason “JJ” Johnson are the only two other forwards announced by the club.
Our friends at Scratching the Pitch have a nice write up about the midfielder during his time with New York that can be found here.
