San Antonio FC announced Monday afternoon the signings of midfielder Miguel Salazar and defender Sam McBride, both of whom played for Coach Darren Powell during his time at Elon University.

SAFC will be the first club Salazar has played for professionally, as he was still with Elon University through the 2015 season. Last season, he earned Colonial Athletic Association first team honors while wearing the captain’s armband for his conference title winning team.

Salazar is a player who helps plays develop more than one that finishes. The Tucson native scored only 3 goals in his college career, but Coach Powell says in a press release that “He’s a talented midfielder who can get the ball off the back four, look for good passing positions and help build the play forward.”

McBride is a 6’1″ defender also coming off of his final college season with Elon. The Greensboro, NC native was named to the 2015 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association’s All-State second team, the All-CAA third team, and the CAA All-Tournament Team last season.

McBride will join Max Gunderson, Stephen McCarthy, Fejiro Okiomah, and Milton Palacios in competing for a spot in the starting XI on April 3rd. Comparing players coming off of one of the most successful college soccer teams in the country to players who have been around professional clubs for a few seasons can be difficult on paper, so I’ll be closely watching any preseason action to see if a starting backline becomes more clear.

That puts SAFC at 12 players announced so far, with another announcement teased for tomorrow via the club’s twitter account. As I’ve said before, Tim Holt has confirmed that what gets announced has been in the works for several weeks. With preseason camp starting on Friday I would expect a mostly full roster to be present. But with USL’s nature of picking up players who just miss making MLS clubs, we very well could see a team of 15 or 20 taking on the first pre-season matches at the end of the month.
