Spurs Sports and Entertainment announced Tuesday the signing of midfielder Carlos Alvarez to its currently unnamed United Soccer League team. Alvarez is the first player named to the franchise, set to premiere April 3rd against Seattle Sounders 2.

Alvarez comes to San Antonio from the Colorado Rapids of MLS, but was on loan to USL’s Charlotte Independence last season. The 25 year old was originally drafted second-overall in the MLS Superdraft by the now-folded Chivas USA before making his way to Colorado.

“Carlos is a player I’ve admired and respected for a long time. He is a creative attacking player that’s looking fora good run of games, and we envision him being a big part of our roster this season,” San Antonio Head Coach Darren Powell said in a press statement.

The signing of Alvarez marks the first of many deals that Director Tim Holt and Head Coach Darren Powell will need to ink in the coming weeks in order to have time to prepare a side for USL play.

Holt and Powell both came most recently from MLS club Orlando City’s development program, bringing with them the expertise of not only how to develop young players, but also how to develop a new USL club into a franchise that MLS can’t help but give an expansion bid. Orlando City joined top division MLS in 2015 after playing in USL from 2010 to 2014, something San Antonio hopes to copy, possibly in a faster timeframe.

Open tryouts are Friday, February 5th, but with an entire roster to fill its entirely possible more player signings will be announced before the open tryout process. SS&E also hinted at possible club name and badge / logo designs being announced this week on the team’s twitter account.
